Am not one myself, but know of a couple. It happens in niche markets
frequently, for a number of reasons.

I'm active in chess (both as an organizer and as a player) and there are a
number of good examples of self-published chess books (Jeremy Silman's work
comes to mind, Alex Baburin is about to try it as well). The market is
small, which enables authors to adequately serve the market without the
resources of a large publishing house, and this makes putting up with the
games that publishing houses play less attractive.

Large distribution becomes a problem for self-published authors, but can
still be done.
