>From my experience over the last 15 years, it has always depended on the
attitude of the individual manager. There may be more ads now that specify
telecommuting, but that doesn't always mean that you will actually be
allowed to do it all the time.

Even in companies that officially allow telecommuting part- or full-time, a
control-freak manager can (and will) insist on seeing you at your onsite
desk or in face-to-face meetings. When you are working off-site, this type
of manager will expect you to be available for frequent 'progress check'
phone calls, and to respond instantly to email messages about administrative
and project-related details. The reduced productivity due to this
time-consuming micro-management can then be used as justification for
pulling you on-site.

The situation is very different when you work with a manager who is secure
in her/his own position and knows how to delegate work. Whether you are
freelancing or captive, this kind of manager is a joy to deal with. While
very few managers are comfortable allowing someone they don't know to
telecommute, a manager who is familiar with your work and trusts your
ability and ethics can be persuaded to allow you to work off-site
occasionally. When you successfully complete these off-site projects, even
in companies with official No Telecommuting policies, you will be allowed to
do more and more of your work off-site. Once you have established a
reputation for telecommuting reliability with one manager, you can use this
reference to get other telecommuting projects.
