There are a few of us left, John. A few...and the noble impulse is
gradually being beaten out of the rest. Even gray-haired disciples of the
traditional work ethic are not immune. Three and a half weeks after our
latest downsizing/reorganization, my self-analysis detects early symptoms of
work-to-rule disease and a slight tendency to clock-watch.

When efforts to provide accurate, useful deliverables are punished, not
merely ignored---and when equipment failures, beta software crashes, changes
in customer requirements, and weather-related power outages are
reinterpreted as evidence of individual incompetence---it becomes
increasingly difficult to nourish a personal focus on quality and maintain a
high moral attitude toward job responsibilities.

Doesn't anyone believe in the premise of working to make the best
deliverable instead of only making sure that the employer isn't being
cheated and to do only enough to make your conscious feel OK?
