Thanks so much, Connie, for that helpful (and fast) tip! I went into
Photoshop and resaved a few GIFs without transparency, and they look fine
in the PDF. It's strange that the same GIFs that got distorted here at work
were normal in the PDF I made at home, but I'll worry about that detail
some other time. I'm just glad I can use GIFs now.

FWIW, transparency in Photoshop is more complicated than I realized. When I
created the original files, I created new images with a transparent
background. When I added a white layer underneath everything and saved as a
GIF (Photoshop 6), I assumed that the resulting GIF wouldn't have
transparency. Oops... it did. To fix it, I created a new file with a white
background, pasted my image into it, and saved it.

And to think I was blundering around in the registry...!

Maybe I should skip the summary--seems like that would be overkill, when my
problem was solved with one single reply. :) Thanks again.
