I'm not sure that the experience of contractors is too relevant to
anyone in a full-time position. As a contractor, you simply don't
have time to be bored.

As an alternative to contracting, I'd suggest a startup or else
setting up documentation for a company. Startups may be rarer than
they were a year ago, but many established companies are weak in
documentation. But the point is, in either circumstance, you are
likely to have a lot of autonomy, and be able to vary your job
considerably. Responsibility and variety: those are what I depend on
to keep from getting bored.
