Well, maybe that's the answer to my question. If so, it makes me sad.

Ask the programmer why he wants documentation without a side column. There
are a number of possibilities, which break down into two cases:

1) He has a reason for wanting it done this way.

2) He has no reason for wanting it done this way.

You, and much less random writers on a mailing list, can't begin to come up
with a response until you know which.
