Long ago, on Fri, 9 Feb 2001 09:13:34 -0800 (PST), to be precise, John Posada <jposada01 -at- yahoo -dot- com> asked:

I had an agency come to me with a different way of payment than what
I'm used to (contractor, paid by the hour).

Their proposition was for me to be paid as a contractor at $600/per
day instead of by the hour..it is for an 8 hour day, the rate per day
holds to up to 10 hours per day, and over than, I get hourly. If i
work less than 8, still the same rate per day.

John:

When I worked as a consulting programmer, I billed this way. Except, I billed by the day and the half day. I kind of accumulated fractional days so if I worked two 10 hour days, I'd bill for 2.5 days. If I worked a 24 hour day, I'd either bill for 3 days or take a few days off and bill for them...

I really liked working this way. I felt more comfortable having informal conversations with people I worked with and going to lunch with them on the rare occasions I came in to the office because I wasn't worrying about accounting for each hour.

One anecdote:

One of my clients did not want to pay by the day, which had been my preference. But the project I was working on required me to commute to Curacao, which is a small island off the coast of Venezuela. (Yeah, tough life, huh?) The flight to Curacao takes over 9 hours. There was a plane change in Florida and then a lay-over in the scariest, most awful airport in the world (IMHO) -- Haiti. It's open-air, there are beggars everywhere, they pocket your passport and you have to pay them off to get it back, and they yell at you in French when they return it. It's AWFUL, AWFUL. Well, anyway, after my first trip to Curacao, the invoice billed them for 18 hours of travel time. (After all, I wasn't earning income for ANOTHER client while sitting in 102 degree heat at the airport in Haiti.)

Within minutes after I faxed that invoice, they became fans of per-day billing.

Sorry to be so late with this response.

What did you decide, John? Or, maybe if I catch up on my TECHWR-L reading, I'll figure that out.
