After learning English in school, they came to live in an English-speaking society that is full of peculiar turns of phrase their teachers probably avoided. The other people they work with (from 5 or 10 different countries themselves, maybe) also expand their English as she is spoken (as Mark Twain said) from the people around them, not from text books.

I don't see any reason to be cutsey in a procedures manual, but I don't
suppose you're saying "Hey Dude, like don't put the 20s in with the 10s,
okay?" <g>

What is it you're trying to avoid? Contractions?
