There's a lot of good information and useful links on the web site
of the American Society of Indexers (ASI). Start with the FAQ
(http://www.asindexing.org/indfaq.shtml), and don't skip the list
of general publications (http://www.asindexing.org/bibliog.shtml)
and ASI publications (http://www.asindexing.org/asipub.shtml).

There's also copntact info for indexers (like Jan Wright and Lori
Lathrop) who have a lot of experience with the kind of indexing
you're about to take on.

If you get stuck, drop me a note off-list.
