I had a recent problem with a Word97 document not printing and
Word97 crashing. I think my problem had to do with "creating list
numbering" (see below). If anybody has similar problem, I found several
solution(s) at http://mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm .

"If you create list numbering using the Format + Bullets and
Numbering dialog, this is likely to lead to a corruption arising eventually,
especially if you also have the "Automatically update document styles"
checkbox ticked on the Tools + Templates and Add in's dialog (less of a
problem with Heading numbering than other types)."
This may of been the primary culprit. I was using "Automatically
update document styles" and document started to fail to print after about 9
pages. Went in and did what they suggested for remedy (see below) and
document started printing. Also, defragged my hard drive, and made a new
template for future sections. MS knows about this bug in Office97 and never
has fixed it. Various people have figured out work-a-rounds. It's
interesting to note that the problem still exists in Office 2000!
