Let me mention diff3, too. This nifty little command will compare
two modified versions of a file against the original, and then
combine the modified versions into one file. It's mostly used for
programming, but I don't think I need to belabour the joy of the
command for writing, too.

The only drawback is if you get the files you're working with
confused.
