John Garison reports: <<Geoff Hart slipped in a great little goodie after a
humorous aside - he used an <Fe> tag. I knew it wasn't a REAL tag ... and it
took a minute to click: <fe> - Start Irony </fe> - End Irony>>

Yup! Glad you spotted it. Since you were wondering, there's a whole slew of
these things that I invented (and almost never use) nearly 5 years ago on
copyediting-l. They enjoyed their own brief moment of fame, and even got
republished in Delta's in-flight magazine at one point. If you're an STC
member, you can find my "periodic table of the emoticons" in the following
article:

Hart, G.J. 1998. (e)Xpressive Markup Language? Intercom June 1998: 44.

I've asked the Rays whether they'd be willing to repost this on Raycomm's
techwr-l site for those who are interested in occasionally appalling puns
and rather obscure "in" jokes. <g> Stay tuned!

"Arthur C. Clarke had suggested that any sufficiently advanced technology
would be indistinguishable from magic--referring to a possible encounter
with an alien civilization--but if a science journalist had one
responsibility above all else, it was to keep Clarke's Law from applying to
human technology in human eyes."--Greg Egan, "Distress"
