Don't put a <pre> tag on each line. Just put one before the
entire code segment and a </pre> tag at the end of the code
segment.

You don't have to change paragraph marks to line breaks,
either. The <pre> tag will ignore any Word settings for
space above and below--that's its purpose.

(If you *really* want to control how the code segments look,
use CSS to define font, indentation, space above and below,
...the works. The 4.x and later versions of IE and NS will
know what to do with it.)
