You know, the best grammar class I took, began with the professor reading an
excerpt form a story where the protagonist, a writer, was embroiled in a
real life mystery. In this excerpt, he was trying to get some info from some
street corner gangster types. But he choked and used _proper_ grammar, they
knew he was a fake, and he knew he blew it.

The message there (much like your post) was that all grammar and usage is
audience and context driven. And that basing it on arbitrary rules can have
consequences.
