An important issue here, it seems to me,
is that one of the editor's critical
functions is to help writers become
better writers. To do that effectively,
editors must give answers to writers'
questions about why a particular edit
was made. Therefore, an ability to
articulate the reason or reasons --
accompanied by a citation from an
acknowledged authority -- for one's
edits is part of the job description of
an editor.
