Jim,

I would be much more likely to write something like:

The program opens the ABC window. The information you enter in this
window (refer to Entering Data in the ABC Window) makes up the search
criteria for
your XYZ query.

where Entering Data in the ABC Window is a hyperlink to the next section.
This makes the connection clear (by giving the title) and direct (by
offering a hyperlink), rather than relying on the user to figure out where
to go for the information.
