I think I was at least a tad misunderstood when I made that comment.

I simply meant that, rightly or wrongly, because "TECHWR-L" is not (as of now) an established organization, people's employers may not see the value of committing any resources to it whatsoever.

Why would an online TECHWR-L conference be considered a "non-work-sanctioned event?" Would your employer rather put you on a plane and pay for your hotel room and conference fees instead?
