TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Here in the UK the picture is a bit different - perhaps it's because courses etc in TW have been few and far between (getting better). The ISTC (equivalent to STC) actively encourages members to 'get qualified' . As part of this process they have been involved in the creation of NVQs (National Vocational Awards) in TW which are recognised across Europe. Although the driving force has been the ISTC the certification is done by an external body. Process involved going to those that use TWer (industry), asking what they saw as a requirement from TWers and progressed from there.
