RE: .php files

languages, PHP can be created in Word, as it is simply a text file that a
server parses for instructions. I have to wonder, though, if this is what
you are really looking at because while your submitter could have
constructed stories for a newsletter in PHP, it would kind of be overkill
and more likely she would have use PHP to create the structure of the
document. ... Is it possible that your submitter created a newsletter using PHP rather
than stories for it?
Many of us who write in PHP create .PHP files to structure the program AND .PHP files to contain the content. The advantage of saving the content files with a .PHP extension is that casual users can't read them in their browsers. PHP does not require that included files be named in any particular way.
That said, as was noted by others, these .PHP files, all of them, both code (structure) and content, should be text files that you can read with any editor capable of reading ASCII text. (Even DreamWeaver, but you do have to persuade DW to open the .PHP. The issue with DreamWeaver is that it can't parse the PHP so it won't show the structure of the PHP pages.)
I'd vote that you use Notepad if you don't have a text editor of choice.
