*I* think I chose a good corporate environment. I was working as a contractor
at a LARGE telecom (emphasis on the L). Worked there for four and a half years,
but we didn't really like each other. When my present employer came calling, I
was looking for an employee, uh sorry, associate-friendly environment. I did
plenty of research on this place and got lots of positive feedback, so I took a
flyer on it, and I haven't regretted it. I recently had a death in the family.
The boss said to take all the time I needed and not come back till I was ready.
I was gone a total of eight days, and it cost me nothing: no vacation or
personal days lost, no money lost, and no hassles.

Here's the flip side: the company I work for is headquartered in another city
and from everything I see the corporate culture at headquarters is NOT one I
would have signed on with. (I think we have schizophrenia.) Had I interviewed
and researched there, I probably wouldn't be working for the company.

So I guess in large enough companies, you need to know the departmental
culture, not just the corporate culture.
