Here is a summary of advice given for reducing the file size of Word
documents.
Obviously not all suggestions will be appropriate for all scenarios.
Other than item 1 which featured a lot, the list is no particular order.

Thank you to all contributors both on and off list.

1. Turn off Fast Saves.
2. Turn off Background Saves. Especially in W2K
3. Using two alternate copies of your doc, use SAVE AS instead of SAVE.
4. Remove all section breaks, copy the entire document EXCEPT THE LAST PARA
MARK to a new document and see what your new size is. If this drops heaps of
size - you have an issue with style differences twixt template and document,
and/or extraneous list templates from bad list management.
5. Don't use versions.
(One the major causes of bloat is saving of multiple versions. This
can be defeated by the old, x insert trick.
Open a new document, type "x" and delete it.
Then do a file insert and save the new document under the name of the
doc you just inserted).
6. Don't use track changes.
7. Don't embed graphics.
8. On the Summary Page:
Delete any Comments, Category or Keywords you do not absolutely need
Delete any Custom information you do not absolutely need
Deselect Save Preview Picture.
9. On the Contents Page:
Check the summary - it should be very short (if any). If it is too long, you
should delete it and recreate it.
10. Remove Themes and Background Fills/Effects
11. Avoid over use of word art.
