Design doesn't mean pretty. Design means functional. Many times functional
looks pretty, but pretty is not the goal, functional is. This true for UIs
as well as documents.

Even graphics designers use methodologies aimed at solving a problem rather
than pushing a non-functional aesthetic.

I always coach people to say it's functional rather than pretty.
