It's not an online phenomenon,
unfortunately. I have seen it in
footnotes in books, but my friend did
not send me an example. I found many
examples on the Internet of the ligature
"AE", and one site that explained that
it can be used as an abbreviation for
several words in Latin and Greek, but I
found no definition of it used as a
free-standing term, which is the way
I've seen it.

I shall write my friend and ask her to
send me an example in context.

Marilyn, please send me an example in
context!
