Same here. Actually, five years ago, I was editing/revising operations
manuals for an air cargo carrier, but I was 1) a temporary employee (NOT
contract, meaning I made almost nothing), and 2) attempting to break into a
different field entirely. I didn't even have a title, much less "tech
writer," and it never occurred to me that I could make an actual living
doing work like that. It took a few more years and a few other positions
(with writing, tech or otherwise, as part of my job the entire time) for me
to decide to turn to TW full-time.
