re Indicating the use of text formatting in ASCII text?

Forgive me if this has recently been mentioned (I'm on digest)
but if you allow Word all its default autoformatting and 
autocorrection, it will automatically italicize what your
underscores delimit and automatically bold what your asterisks
delimit.  Thus Microsoft supports those particular conventions.
