The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I used to work for Fidelity Investments - a company that is very fond of
acronyms. (Hi Connie!) What's more, every acronym starts with Fidelity:
Fidelity Investments Development Organization (FIDO), Fidelity
Telecommunications Company (FTC), etc. ad nauseum. One of my writers
called our acronym list 'the F-words.'
We mandated that the first time an F-word was used in a chapter, it was
spelled out. Yes, it was possible to have Fidelity Telecommunications
Company spelled out 13 times in a document, if need be. But I think it
helped with the acronym vertigo. Plus, you can't count on users starting
in Chapter One and reading sequentially - our users skipped around. So,
anywhere they went in the book, they could count on learning what FTC was,
or FISM, or FSDC, or FSC, or FMR..or....

(who has a few choice F-words of her own that she can't publish here)

"...yes, idealism, yes the dignity of pure research, yes the pursuit of
truth in all its forms, but there comes a point, I'm afraid, where you
begin to suspect that if there's any real truth, it's that the entire
multidimensional infinity of the Universe is almost certainly being run by
a bunch of maniacs." - Frankie the mouse, in "Hitchhiker's Guide to the
