Thank you all for your assistance!

I may have been too cryptic in my original post, but I did get
the kind of information I was looking for.

I've been given three documents, to blend into a new document.
I didn't write any of the three; right now, I'm analyzing the
documents and assessing how best to blend them.

The document will be available on the installation CD, and will
be a guide that will point to one of several very detailed
installation guides, depending on the components our customers
are installing. The users will be (or had better be!) highly
skilled technical personnel.

The problem with the original three documents is that they were
developed with a great deal of management interference... er,
imput... so I have to be cautious about what I change. On the
other hand, we've recently gotten internal feedback that our
documents are too detailed, and that we give too much
unnecessary detail for the level of user we have.

Thank you, too, to all who suggested alternate wordings.

I now have much more ammunition to defend my word choices and
changes.

-Becca
