I've sometimes resorted to this rather laborious technique:

1. In Word, use View, Zoom to enlarge the graphic as much as possible
while still fitting within the screen.

2. Use screen-capture software (I prefer the functionality included in
Paint Shop Pro) to capture the graphic.

3. Use graphics software (again I like PSP) to crop and edit the screen
capture. You can minimize the file size by reducing the number of colors
in the image as much as possible.

4. Save the image for future use.


Although this is time-consuming (and a pain in the butt), it DOES leave
you with the most control over the graphic. My experience has been that
people casually paste screen caps into documents in a manner that inflates
the document's file size exponentially. By doing this procedure, you'll
have more control of the document and its associated graphics, and should
be able to create leaner, meaner documents that are easier to manage.
