This is like the quarterly (annual) goals question that came up a few weeks
ago. The point of the question is to determine if you have goals, if those
goals are aligned with the goals of the company, if the company can assist
you in achieving those goals, and what if anything will the company do to
help you achieve those goals. It's a tough question, because they are your
motivators. It will tell a manager how hard it will be to work with you, and
what that manager will have to do to enable your achievement. It's not
really a trick question.

The number of people who can be productive doing the same tasks day in, day
out, are few. For the rest of us there has to be some end goal. I know that
I need to have certain skills to increase my value in the workplace and my
salary. I know that I want to get off the staff tract and into a line track.
I know that there are things that I would like to be developing that my
company would let me develop if I could find a sponsor.

Ultimately, you are in control of your career. And, what the interviewer
wants to know is are you in control of your career, and what they can do to
help you with it.
It's a question that gets asked often, think about an answer ahead of time.
