I've started asking if I could see the work space where I would work. Most of the time they'll show me. It's an eye opener. I'm not looking for the penthouse and windows necessarily, but "we're going to partition off some office space here where the copier is" really helped me decide.

I've had one or two HR people interview me in a casual manner about my field in general (not tech comm at the time), more in a conversational format than an interview, but they never drilled deeper than the mulch. More like they were trying to get a feel for my personality, how I'd fit with the team, etc.

I take a different approach when I to into interviews. I used to get nervous and worked up, but now I go in and interview the company. I respond to interviewers questions and inane "what ifs" with responses that sell my skills, not necessarily the answer they're looking for. Being in command of the interview is a mindset you have to get into long before you walk in the lobby.

If I ever get the "how do you get a giraffe in the refrigerator" question again, though, I may have resort to more severe tactics.
