I don't believe anyone, including myself, actually suggested telling any
outright lies. I do believe most folks who responded said it was fair game
to say you had some/limited experience, and then to make sure that statement
was true BEFORE you went to any interviews by getting familiar with the
tool/app any way you could - eval copies, buying older versions, borrowing
copies, etc.

Now, if you don't have that level of confidence in yourself and the personal
commitment to learn something quickly on your own, then you should never,
ever lie about it.
