Subject:Canadian contractor in France From:Kirsten Travis <ktravis -at- aw -dot- sgi -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 19 Jun 2001 11:32:50 -0400
Hi,
I am an independent contractor currently working and living in Toronto,
Canada. I have landed a tech writing contract in Europe (verbal agreement
so far, we're figuring out details), and I'm a little boggled by all the
implications (known and unknown) about working overseas. ANY information,
experience, words of wisdom, or warnings would be much appreciated so that
I can figure my way through this maze. Feel free to respond to me directly
if this is not entirely suitable for the list (please cc: me at home
dtech -at- idirect -dot- com).
Here is my situation:
1) I have a European passport (UK), so no Visas are required.
2) I hold a Canadian corporation, and the company (in France) is willing to
let me invoice through it (rather than incorporate in France)
3) The contract is initially 4 months long, I'll come home for the
holidays, then likely renew for about another 6-8 months.
Questions (to start):
- Is there any reason why I shouldn't invoice as a Canadian corporation?
Are there any advantages to incorporating in France too?
- I assume I'd have to pay the French government some taxes? What might the
percentage be (depends on income, obviously)? When would this have to be done?
How many months must I be in the country before I must declare residency?
If I pay taxes to the French government, I hear that I would get a tax
credit toward my Canadian personal taxes (how do I avoid paying double the
taxes?)
My main goal here is to sift through details so that I can take a
comprehensive list of questions to an accountant.
thanks,
kirsten
