At least John's name won't be the one they all cite as their source. That
will be the 'friend" who compiled the list and sent it out, I'm sure.
Passing on contact names you've collected isn't a crime. No one owns them.
But it was rude not to reveal the real intentions, so John could decide
whether he wanted to be this helpfuil to a bunch of strangers.

Yeah, that was my first thought... if I were one of John's agency contacts,
and 25 wannabe writers with no qualifications showed up on my doorstep, I
wouldn't say "thank God for the person who provided all of this fabulous
word-of-mouth advertising."
(No, I don't know that they're all unqualified hacks. I made that up. And if
you want to say they're all fabulous people and the recruiter will be
thrilled to hear from them, that's great, but you're making it up too.)
The person who asked you for this information should have been more upfront
about his intentions. I would have been miffed as well.
