Our experiences sound remarkably similar. In my last job, I was a "real"
technical writer. I created and published hardware and software user
manuals for actual products.
In my current job (which included a substantial raise and a signing
bonus!), I have:
*Created a help system in Doc2Help that was never used
*Created a database in MS Access that was never used
*Edited some documents written by developers
*Revised some existing manuals
*Took minutes at code reviews
*Updated some developers' resumes for a RFP
When I interviewed for this job, it appeared that they desparately needed a
tech writer. After six months on the job, I find myself trying to create
work just to stay busy. Unfortunately, the market for tech writers in this
area is in a slump. Plus, there are some benefits to this job, such as the
salary and being able to work at home whenever I need to.
It helps to know there are others out there in the same boat.
