Me: I'm a technical writer at Matrox Electronics
Person: Oh really - I have this graphics card that ...
Me: Ah... I work for another division.
Person: Well - I've heard a lot about your Video group winning an Emmy this
year...
Me: Nope. Wrong division.
Person: Oh. Um - Imaging. That's it - you work with imaging soft...
Me: Sigh...
Person: E-commerce? Didn't they just launch Matrox.tv?
Me: <wandering away>
Person: Marketing? Sales? Legal? MIS? Accounting ... what?

I rarely get asked about technical writing.
When I do - I describe it as:
"Writing the manuals and help systems no one reads."
Which usually either gets an "oh." or starts an interesting discussion.
