For taking Screen Captures, I use and like SnagIT 32. Why? Because it
automates my process from naming files, to specifying output type, to
resampling color depth and resolution. With the push of a hotkey-combo, I
can capture exactly the region I want, resample it for my intended output,
and save the file to a specified location and using an automatic naming
convention. Plus, SnagIT works as well in Win 9x as it does in NT.

There could be many reasons for this. Try not to resize the image in Word.

I don't know what you mean by distorted, but consider this. PDF's screen
display is less sophisticated than Word's. (Though, in terms of megabytes,
Acrobat is a lot smaller and less sophisticated than Word, too.) Also, think
about the image you captured. If you resample it to anything other than
96dpi, or if you display it at anything other than 100%, or both, then the
image will be less than crisp. Why? Because your screen has a fixed
resolution, probably of 96dpi.

Each of these programs is capable of producing exactly the same output. If
you got differing results, the issues were yours, not the programs'. Of the
lot, Photoshop is a poor choice for screen captures. Why? Because it does
not automate the process, requiring you to use the klutzy Print Screen
method or another tool. Photoshop does have the benefit of being able to
create interpolated EPS screen captures, if that is important to you.
However, it probably isn't.
