RE: Nielsen's Rating
While I'm sure both Mr. Emory and Mr. Nielsen make some salient points, I=======================================================
haven't got enough time or energy to address them all. But here's a basic
point that someone recently made to me about PDFs: The Internet is not an
8.5 x 11 medium.
Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that standards tend to last longer and be
more respected if they're open source. Adobe's, clearly, is not.
You're wrong on both points.
1. Nothing in Acrobat or PDF dictates a particular page size. Any custom page size can
be specified when you print a document to postscript for subsequent conversion to
PDF. In FrameMaker, at least, you can even make the PDF document larger or smaller
than the original FrameMaker document size by specifying a percentage reduction
or enlargement of the original document when printing to a postscript file, and the
resulting PDF file produced by Distiller will be that size. Evidently, you've never
even examined the on-line documentation which comes with Acrobat.
The size of that documentation is 5.57 x 5.57 inches.
2. Both the postscript and PDF languages are adopted non-proprietary standards,
and the complete documentation for those languages is available on-line at no cost.
Any software developer is free to develop applications that produce postscript or
PDF output, and, if PDF is the output, it can be displayed in the free
Acrobat Reader product. There are already many applications
which use XSLT to convert XML information to PDF. Why would any developer
want the source for Acrobat Reader when the product itself is free to all comers?
