While I agree that proximity is important, it's not always possible. But I
think it *is* possible to succeed (even without great strain and pain) when
the working conditions aren't optimal. I'm currently working with project
teams who are not only in different buildings, we're in three different
countries, in three different times zones (I think that's all), and on two
different continents. Scheduling conference calls when everyone is awake is
a challenge. But it works.

I'd rather we were all in the same spot because I usually get the most
interesting news in hallway meetings and over the cube wall. But with the
help of the telephone, the internet, email, and the occasional airplane, we
make it work -- and it's not a terrible experience. It takes some
adjustment, but it works.
