On grants:

The Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org is a very good place to
start. Also, almost all major corporations have information on their
websites about their corporate philanthropy. Don't forget your larger local
companies (such as grocery store chains), utilities and phone companies.

A few tips:

1. Follow the instructions to the letter. Omissions will disqualify you.

2. Don't count on your skills as a writer alone to get you the money. I'm
sure you write beautifully and persuasively, but a personal connection to
someone in the company who believes in your program/project is very helpful.

3. Do your homework. Certain groups favor certain kinds of philanthropy.
Some donate more to the arts, others to education, others to human services.
Know your audience. ;)

Good luck to you,
Cindy Kight
former head of literacy non-profit
