A couple of people have already asked me off-list where they can learn
more about open source projects, so I thought I'd post my answer to the
list in general:
- www.gnu.org - The Free Software Foundation's site. This is where it
all begun, so you can also learn about the free software movement. There
are links to dozens of projects, mostly to do with Linux, but not
entirely
-www.kde.org - The site for the KDE desktop, one of Linux's standards.
You can find information about KOffice, an office suite in development
as well as other programs designed to run under KDE.
-www.gnome.org - The site for the KDE deskop, one of the standards for
Linux and various incarnations of UNIX. Includes links to GNOME-specific
projects.
-www.sourceforge and www.collab.net: sites that try to link free/open
source developers and project sponsors.
Note: "free" in "free software" is used in a political sense; the Free
Software Foundation's basic tenet is that the right to copy and modify
software should be a basic part of freedom of expression. However, while
some of the projects you'll find are volunteer, others pay people on the
team.
