Documentation is a profit centre! That is the top and the bottom and the
middle of it. If you work as a contractor you charge for the documents you
produce, it is a profit centre. If you work for a dedicated publishing
company you charge for the documents you produce, it is a profit centre. If
you work in a technical publishing department for a manufacturing company ,
whether software or hardware, that company prices its products after taking
into account the overheads incurred in producing the product, one part of
which is documentation, it is a profit centre. That company may decide it
will give away additional copies of the documentation to customers who ask
for nothing, but you can bet your last dollar that it will be tweaking it's
price to maintain it's profit margin. If it doesn't then pretty soon it
will be bye-bye nice charitable friendly company.
