The distinction may not be a big deal, but I thought I'd put out my feelers:

I'm writing a description of a report. When the application generates this
report, the report provides data based on work done the previous day (e.g.,
If run on Monday, the report will show data from Sunday.). It's been
recommended that I use "preceding" day to "previous" day, but no reason has
been given. I also began thinking about "prior" day.

No matter what, I am required to use some such phrase. As far as I can
tell, the three possible options are synonymous, but I wondered if any of
you had encountered semantic disasters as a result of thinking that these
terms were interchangeable.

Thanks for your thoughts.
