Did I miss the part where + and - don't work? How about a bicycle and a jet
airplane? Why icons? How about the short words "Fast" and "Slow." Now, I
understand these may need to be translated for foreign versions of your
software, but consider that by inventing glyphs you are creating a
"language" with which your audience will be less than familiar, whereas they
presumably have a native tongue that will do the job just fine.
