I don't think you'll have to face a loss of 30K, even if you tell the truth.

If you feel you must tell them what you made (and I'm standing right next to
you on the wuss meter), you just need to be clear about the extenuating
circumstances. You had certain priorities other than salary(ie family)
then; that is not the case now (whenever now is). Now you can be more
flexible as to location, etc., and therefore the salary must be competitive
to interest you. Your chief asset is not being a cheap hire.

I'm currently in a job that's paying 10-15K below the norm. When I go look
for a job I will be sure to mention some of the perks other than salary:
the 1 day a week telecommuting, the really interesting technology, the
Mariners tickets, the terrific team I work with...some are more tangible
than others, but they all factor into my "total" compensation.
