I have to agree with Dannette. I read the question the same way she did,
and I would have to say that for the people who pick up and read technical
writing, tech writing is a stepping stone to help them achieve other goals:
installing software, building a piece of furniture, operating a robot,
repairing a jet engine, etc.

For me personally, technical writing is a way to earn money, interact with
other humans on a daily basis, and have exposure to technology--three things
I enjoy spending my time doing.
