I used to do non-technical writing for fun (my rather twisted free verse was
gaining a following in certain underground press circles), but I pretty much
lost interest when I started doing tech comm. I just seemed too much like
work then.

True. But even proprietary developers are likely to have an interest in
coding outside the job. By contrast, not many tech-writers are
interested in writing technical documentation outside of work. Most free
software projects have immense trouble finding writers.
