Well... it's just a thought, but if you look at a cost in terms of formulae
(complex or simple) you may come to the conclusion that although John costs
$55 an hour, he's worth it, because his credentials are so good that he'll
get the job done with no expensive timewasting.

But from John's story, the hiring manager wasn't willing to pay anyone as
much as s/he/it's getting. (I recall a similiar story from another company,
when I overheard the hiring manager say indignantly "She asked for £19K a
year! I don't make that!" at a time when that was a high but reasonable rate
for a good technical writer - anywhere in Edinburgh outside the company I
was working for.)
