I asked:
-----Original Message-----
Does anyone know what the "f" in fvmw stands for? Or, for that matter, how
"vmw" stands for "Virtual Window Manager"? I used my favourite resource for
acronyms http://www.acronymfinder.com/, and googled on it when that failed
me.
----
And was answered very promptly by a horde of helpful people, which lack of
time prevents me from acknowledging individually, but I have learned:

"F" appears to be of uncertain meaning, but the most sensible option is
"free".

The acronym originally *was* "fvwm" but has been transposed by some
illiterate developer in prehistoric times, so that both "fvwm" and "fvmw"
are acknowledged as valid.

So that entry on my glossary now reads: fvmw (since that's the variation
we're using): "Free Virtual Window Manager".

Thanks very much.
