Because most of us take the approach described by Robert Heath
in his post. The recent TECHWR-L poll on the topic reports that
for over 75% of us, contact with end users happens rarely or
never.
For most of us, it seems that fighting for more customer contact
is a battle we cannot win, so we substitute empathy and
role-playing skills. Enhancing our ability to function without
direct customer contact makes better business sense than trying
to get more customer contact.
(Finding a better job is a battle that can be won, sometimes.)
