Ah. So a big ol' misunderstanding all around. ;)
I wouldn't say living in those areas is "suffering", it's just different.
Some would consider living in a farming town 100 miles from nowhere to be
suffering as well... or living in the 'burbs as suffering... It's all
subjective.

Exactly. The original poster said that you would have to suffer to have a
high adjusted for cost of living salary and posted a list of places where
that was possible. The (I thought rather obvious) inference is that living
in those places = suffering. That was what I found offensive.
